- Great shifting performance, high shift speed and smooth shifting while out of the saddle.
- Semi-wireless: there is still a cable connection between the battery, front and rear derailleur. Easier mounting and little chance of cable breakage.
- You can bleed the brakes without unscrewing the caliper from the frame. Very handy!
- With Di2 electronic shifting, you must adjust the derailleurs once and they will adjust themselves automatically in the future.
- 10% more space between the pistons, reducing the risk of rotor rubbing.
- 80 grams heavier compared to the Dura Ace R9270 disc brake set.

The Shimano Ultegra ST-R8170 + BR-R8120 disc brake set consists of a Shimano R8170 2x12 speed shifter with Shimano Ultegra R8120 hydraulic brake caliper with bled hydraulic hose. This is also available as either a front or rear set.
Shifters
The ergonomics of the Shimano Ultegra R8100 shifters have been optimised and are similar to the Dura Ace R9200 Disc Di2 groupset. The ergonomics of the Shimano Ultegra R8100 shifters are comfortable in the hand. You have better control and can comfortably adopt multiple positions. The shifters each feature a button-cell battery that maintain the connection to the front and rear derailleurs. These have a battery life of around 1.5 years of use.
Disc brakes
The disc brakes have also been taken in hand. The Ultegra caliper consists of 2 parts and is CNC milled. Just like the Dura Ace calipers, there is 10% more space between the pads and the rotors. This has ensured that the brakes have little to no touching when you are not braking. Nothing is more annoying than rotors rubbing on during a climb or in a sprint. Braking power and metering are also noticeably improved.

The brakes use Shimano's Servo Wave Action. This technology means that the speed at which the pistons go in becomes slower as the pistons get closer to the disc. This preserves the engagement torque that Shimano brakes are known for, but greatly improves brake metering.

All adjustment options such as assigning shift buttons, automatic shifting or adjusting shifting speed can be done via the Shimano DI2 app. The function of the shift buttons are individually configurable. The synchronised shift or semi-synchronised shift in which the front derailleur automatically shifts with it for the ideal chainline is also an option.
